The University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt introduces the new course Media Design which is the mirrored course from the Irish course BAM, which is based in the Cork Institute of Technology. The two institutions will strongly cooperate in the fields of Multimedia and Media Design. What is Media Design Are you creative, innovative and technically aware? Media Design is audiovisual communication spezialised on media such as the World Wide Web, DVD, tv etc. Its design studies involves the nessesary technical, logical, business, social, cultural aspects as well as the creative aspects. It is the delivery of messages using still and moved images, text and sound for innovative medias, created with the nessesary technology know how. Messages may be educational, informative, business or entertainment oriented.
In this course students become creative communicators or storytellers using a variety of oral, visual, technical, logical, or business "languages" in a mostly technical enviroment. They work in teams to manage and solve problems that need a multi-faceted approach.
BA Degree in Media Design Media Design involves the seamless integration of image, sound and text, distributed over any medium such as the World Wide Web, DVD, TV etc. The multimedia industry will always need specialists in areas such as graphic design, video production, sound engineering, photography, programming, computer networking, project management, and marketing. However, the industry has stabilised to such an extent that it is now possible to define what multimedia is, and to define the general skills needed by a professional working in the business.
The BA degree in Media Design is a four-year programme that incorporates many of the skills listed above. It aims to produce professionals with a wide range of skills, while allowing them to specialise in a particular area of expertise.
Social and Cultural Studies, along with the Akademie für Tonkunst, Darmstadt, all make significant contributions to this course.
The Student Experience: The course is taught through the medium of formal lectures, tutorials, project and practical work, continuous assessment, and lectures by visiting professionals. There is a strong emphasis on project work, particularly in teams. The third year of the course incorporates a period of industry placement, of duration 8 - 12 weeks.
Course Programme
Year 1
Foundation year. You learn the basic principles in many of the different areas, including Visualisation, Programming, Communications, Multimedia Production, Multimedia Technology and Media Culture.
Year 2
You focus on specific tools required for multimedia production, incorporating subjects such as Multimedia lmaging, Image Technology, Programming, Audio Technology, Media Culture, History of Design and Management.
Year 3
You fit together the various subjects areas, while working on projects in teams, and begin to develop individual specialisations. Subjects include: Programming, Graphic Imaging, Audio-Video Technology, Project Management, Media Culture and Project. Electives include Film & Media, Aesthetics and Philosophy of Science. There is a formal work placement at the end of this year; the duration is from 8 - 12 weeks.
Year 4
You hone skills acquired throughout the first three years, learn new skills and continue to develop individual areas of interest. Subjects include: Information Management, Graphic lmaging, Data Communications, Media Culture, Marketing & Enterprise, Project. Electives include Music Technology and Multimedia lmaging.
